10 in 10 Challenge: Day 2

10 in 10 Challenge: Day 2 Update

10 Reasons to Drink Water from Team Beachbody:

1. Your body is made up primarily of water. When you're properly hydrated, about two-thirds of your body is water—muscle tissue is even higher, at around 70 percent, while fat is less. Muscle powers your body and fat protects it. Put two and two together, and you may infer that water is vital to the things that make your body do stuff. When you don't drink enough water, your body declines into a state we call dehydration. Get too dehydrated, and your body will not function properly, which isn't too surprising when your body's low on such a vital nutrient. (Your body can be as much as up to 65 percent water!)

2. You don't need to drink 65 percent of your weight in water each day. This is because, one, if you lost all the water in your body, you'd be dead, and two, that water makes up most of all the living things on our planet. Since we eat living—or recently alive—things, we get some water from the things we eat. When we cook things, they lose their water. This means that the more raw whole foods you eat, the less water you need to drink. Fruits and veggies lead the group of water-rich foods and contain around 95 percent water. If you eat a lot of plants, you can drink less water. But if you don't . . .

3. There is more to hydration than just your water levels. Chemicals in your body react with water so that you can function. We lose water in the form of sweat, and sweat is made up of water and body "salts," which are mainly sodium, chloride, and potassium, but they also include magnesium, calcium, and so on. These are called electrolytes and, basically, are the reason that salt is such a vital component in your diet. Salt is a mixture of sodium and chloride, but generally, we use the term "salts" in reference to electrolytes. Too much salt is bad and too little is bad. Both can kill you. This is why, like water, the amount you consume should be directly related to the workload your body is put under. More P90X® or ChaLEAN Extreme® equals more sweat, meaning that you need more water and more salt.

4. What about water weight? Some people are afraid to drink a lot of water because they're afraid of gaining "water weight." This is the opposite of what you should do. Water weight is a term for your body holding on to excess water because it's not getting enough. The best way to get rid of water weight is to drink more water. It works two ways. If you don't drink enough water or if you eat too much salt in your diet, your body hoards water. This water/salt relationship is referred to as your electrolyte balance.

Generally, there's an easy way to tell if you need more water or salt; because most people drink too little water and eat far too much salt—especially those who eat in restaurants. So when you aren't exercising, you almost never need more salt. When you are exercising, getting enough salt becomes an issue. Endurance athletes are ever aware of the need to have enough salt to avoid a condition called hyponatremia, a condition that results when you've had too much water and not enough salt, basically just dehydration from a different angle. Those who don't exercise outdoors excessively almost never have to worry about this condition.

5. So what does water do for you? You'll often hear claims that water helps chemical reactions, regulates your body temperature, and lubricates your joints, eyes, and spinal cord. Sure, it does all of this stuff. In fact, since you're mostly made up of water, a case can be made that it does almost everything. So why split hairs? Your body doesn't work, at all, without being fed a lot of water. You can live days, weeks, and, sometimes, even months without food. But you can't live even a few days without water.

6. Itchy skin. Dry skin. Constipation. Sneezing. Dry cough, headaches, nosebleeds, and acne. These are common ailments related to drinking too little water. Since water regulates your body's functions, it makes sense that minor glitches in bodily functions may be related to not drinking enough water. And this is just a partial list of common ailments. Many symptoms blamed on allergies are probably due to living in a dehydrated state. When you are properly hydrated, your body can better defend itself.

7. The above symptoms may be worse in the winter. Water is required just to breathe, and you lose water through your mouth and lungs. During winter, when the air is dry, more water is required. Add forced heat in the air—like from home heating systems and fires—and the situation is exacerbated. This means that you need to drink extra water in the winter when it's cold, even though you are probably less thirsty.

8. Water and your immune system. During winter, lack of water will dry out the mucous membranes of your lungs, gut, and sinus passages and lessen your resistance to disease. These barriers protect your body against bacteria, viruses, and pollutants when you're fully hydrated and intact. Allowing them to dry out could be the leading cause of the common cold and allergic symptoms, not to mention things like constipation, sinusitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and long-term diseases like hemorrhoids and colon cancer.

9. Water and fat loss. We haven't yet discussed the importance of fat mobilization for energy and its relation to weight loss and effective exercise because, well, this is Nutrition 911 and that sounds complicated. Anyway, water is the main component of this action. A well-hydrated body has higher levels of oxygen in the bloodstream, translating into an increased ability to burn fat as fuel. The more efficiently you burn fat as fuel, the more effectively you exercise, leading to a better overall body composition.

10. How much water? It's said you need about 8 glasses of water a day. However, this will vary due to your activity level and environmental conditions. As a general rule, add a couple of glasses during the hot days of summer and the dry, cold nights of winter. During exercise, you may lose a quart an hour or more. While all liquids provide water, sugar, diuretics (caffeine, etc.), and carbonation reduce the hydration effect. Combining all three, as in soda, can reduce the hydration efficiency of the liquid to almost nil.

10 in 10 Challenge

Hey everyone,

Sorry I've been MIA for a couple weeks but I've been working on a challenge for my Beachbody Team as well as a few other close Twitter & Facebook friends. It's called the 10 in 10 Challenge! What does it entail, you ask? Well here are the details:

10 IN 10 Challenge

1. Eat Fresh-Eliminate processed food

Exceptions: Shakeology

P90x bars

Recovery drink

Read the labels....if there are chemicals on the label, then let's consider it processed

2. Get rid of the white (foods)

3. Increase raw food intake

4. Cardio everyday/Strength 3x a week

5. Stop eating 3 hours before bed

6. Keep a food journal and accurate calorie count

Keep as accurate food diary as possible, including workouts...even if you don't know exact calorie counts, be as detailed as possible in the diary...

7. Downsize (your portions)

8. Eat every 2-1/2 to 3 hours hours (body goes into starvation mode and thinks your starving so holds onto anything you eat...that's how SUMO wrestlers are trained to get big...they starve them for morning and breakfast and then feed them dinner!!!)

9. Identify your achilles heel

Know your weaknesses. Be aware of your food triggers. Use the 10 days to determine how you can handle those triggers

10. No Alcohol or Soda

11. Increase sleep by 1-2 hours each nite. (get 7-8 hours sleep)

Twenty-Ten: Change of Plans & Do More

Hey Blog Buddies!

How's 2010 treating you so far? Good? Bad? Indifferent? What have you accomplished so far? Did you start a new workout? Healthy eating plan? Try a new thing? Plan a trip? Clean out your basement?

2010 is off to a great start for me. I like the ring of 2010 - I feel like it's going to be a great year for Rob and I. I'm sure we'll have our rough days, but as always, I hope to come out stronger from them. There is one thing that's different in 2010 so far - my goal focus. I have a bunch of smaller goals that I am working on to lead to the larger goal (s). My attitude of "Do More" is starting to stick in my head. ::fist pumps:: (Side note: Rob & I have been watching a lot of Jersey Shore on MTV - it's a guilty pleasure)

So about this change of plans...I started my challenge to do P90X this week and...I am not loving it. I tried my week's worth of workouts and it just wasn't for me. The set-up totally throws me off and I just really miss my ChaLEAN Extreme (CEX) and Turbo Jam (TJ). I was watching Rob doing CEX yesterday and I was jealous! It was weird! I think P90X is a STAND UP program and Tony is great - he really knows his stuff. It's great for many people and I love hearing about people's great results from it. More power to them!!

But...if it's not broken, why fix it? So I'm going back to my CEX & TJ combo - upping the amount of cardio and going heavier...until the release of Turbo Fire at least. :) I am still going to use the P90X protein bars & the Post-workout drink because...well it's good for you and they are delish. I'll be honest. Of course, I'm still rocking the Shakeology!

So here's my new plan:
5 days of Cardio (TJ & CEX)
3 days of Strength Training (CEX)
2-3 days of ab/core traning (CEX & TJ)
1 day of Yoga (CEX)

One thing I really did like was the meal plan options for P90X and I plan to use them within my everyday eating - I think that will be the most beneficial!

I think it's good re-evaluate your goals often - sometimes you start something and it just doesn't work for you. In the aspect of fitness, I think it's good to find a replacement before you quit altogether. I found my soulmate workouts and I was trying to force myself to try something different and it just felt 100% awkward and not a good fit and that is ok! That's why there are so many programs out there! Beachbody has got the right idea. ;)

Turbo Time! My new self-challenge

Hi friends :)

So I finished up my 2nd round of ChaLEAN Extreme on last week. I then thought - wait! What's next? Another round? Hm, maybe I need to mix it up...what have I been missing the past few weeks (months!)...

Turbo Jam! Yes, I've been mixing it w/ my ChaLEAN Extreme...but it still wasn't the same to me. So my new challenge is to mix up all my Turbo Jam videos for the month of November. I am ready to SWEAT! (and I am ready for Turbo Fire, Chalene Johnson's next big thing, to be released...but we must wait until next year for that!)

So here's my self-challenge:

Do at least ONE turbo workout a day (this could be DVD or live class).
Incorperate the ab workouts from Turbo Jam (TJ) & ChaLEAN Extreme (CEX) at least 4 times a week.
Use both recipes from Turbo Jam Maximum Results & ChaLEAN Extreme.
Drink Shakeology everyday (typically in the morning).
Log all food intake and calorie burn (thanks to BodyBugg - this is easy!)
Report my results weekly - weight loss/gain & measurements here on the blog.

I love my strength training workouts - but for some reason, I think a month of cardio will really do me good. I am so much stronger than I was in January (or when I started TJ in 2007!) - my endurance is at a much better level & I really enjoy the workouts more and more. So I figured I could really push myself this way and see what results come out of it. I am considering mixing in some of the interval workouts from ChaLEAN Extreme as well to mix it up even more. I'll let you know what I finally decide :)

This week's plan:

Monday: TJ Cardio Party 3 & CEX Ab Burner
Tuesday: TJ Fat Blaster & TK w/ Rachel after work
Wednesday: TJ Punch, Kick, & Jam & TJ Ab Jam
Thursday: TJ 3T & CEX Extreme Abs
Friday: TJ Kickin' Cardio Core (includes ab workout) :)
Saturday: TJ Lower Body Blast & CEX I've Got Abs!

If you're interested in joining my challenge, let me know! :)

I'm a Beachbody Coach!

So, I didn't even have this on my "to do" list here...but it peaked my interest a few months ago.

Here's how it all started...

I joined SparkPeople.com in April of 2007 - I had gained weight due to my lack of activity, hypothyroidism, and making great meals for my new hubby (we were married in October 2006). So I had put on about 20-25 pounds over the past 6 months to a year (I had noticed I gained a little before the wedding - but I attributed that to wedding stress). Well, I'm a tall girl - so an extra 20 pounds didn't show *that* much, but I did notice a difference in my pants size. Well, by April - I was over it. I wanted to be back to my normal size! So I searched for a website w/ good resources to help me get on track.

That's when I found SparkPeople - I made a few online friends and we stayed in touch to motivate one another. Great women and although I don't speak to them as much now - I wish them all the luck and hope to track them down again. :)

On SparkPeople, I kept seeing info about Turbo Jam - I looked it up on the www.beachbody.com website and I thought it looked fun and that Chalene Johnson didn't seem all that annoying at all. (An important thing for me!) So I looked up the workout DVD at our library - we had it - so I was put on a wait list to check it out. I think about 3 or 4 months later I got the email that I could check it out. During that time I tried a number of different fitness DVDS, Shape Bikini Body Camp (decent - but not enough for me); Carmen Electra's Aerobic Striptease (fun for the hubby - but NOT a workout).; 10 Minute Solution: Fat Blasting Dance Mix w/ Jennifer Galardi (fine workout; she just really annoyed me.) and finally - Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. Jillian makes you work - she is great at that but...she just wasn't my cup of tea. I want to be motivated and Jillian does that -for some people, I'm sure - but not me! I was searching for a workout that I enjoyed doing and wouldn't burn out on almost immediately (like Carmen's & the 10 Minute Solution workouts)

So I checked out Turbo Jam, learned the Elite 11 moves and jumped into burning some calories! I liked Chalene's attitude and spunk - I couldn't get enough of it! Before I even returned the items to the library - I ordered the Turbo Jam Maximum Results package so I wouldn't miss a day. ;) Two years later - I have stuck with Chalene and I now own:
Turbo Jam Fat Burning Elite
Chalene Johnson's Get on the Ball!
ChaLEAN Extreme

And now - I have taken the plunge and become a Beachbody Coach!! I have had such great success (and FUN!!!) with Chalene's programs that I want to share it with my friends and family!
I have lost 14 pounds so far - which to a hypothyroid...is a lot! ;) I can share with you what programs have really helped me in this lifestyle change and we can work on our success stories together. I would love to help you with your weightloss journey!

So if you're interested in changing your life, let me know! Beachbody does not just sell the Turbo Jam products - they are also the creators of the P90x workout system that is SO popular and EFFECTIVE!

Feel free to take a look at my website - http://www.beachbodycoach.com/swissms99
If you are already in love with these programs and want to take it to the next level, let me know! You can start making money and lose weight at the same time - what could be better than that?

Today could be the first day of a new "you" - what are you waiting for? Let's do this! :)

#3 - Try out a new workout routine every 90 days.

So here are my new addictions. Turbo Jam & ChaLEAN Extreme. I have alternated between the two for a few weeks now. I love them both so much...all because of one key person...Chalene Johnson! Seriously, if you've been looking for that perfect workout...look no further. Give Chalene a shot! She's very positive, fun personality, which is perfect for me! (Even my husband loves Chalean Extreme!!)

So I didn't have the complete Turbo Jam set (and I still really don't have all of them) until a few months ago so I'm on a big Turbo Jam, TJ, kick (no pun intended) at the moment . It seriously relieves my stress from work and the everyday mundane. When I first did TJ a couple of years ago, I wasn't sure if I liked it all that much....at least the longer workouts...but now...omg, I can't get enough! I get frustrated when I can't fit it in after work. (I know, I know, Chalene - I need to wake up earlier and just do it in the morning!) :P

So I have advice on this whole getting healthy/working thang, find something you LOVE already! Seriously, once you find something FUN and active to do everyday of the week - it doesn't feel like work...it feels like...fun! lol And I was not an athlete before this....or least for many years so I feel like have a leg to stand on with this topic. :)

Anyway, so there's my two workouts I'm going to be doing for 90 days each...TJ for these 90 days and then switch back to Chalean Extreme (CE) after that.
